Subject: Warm ups before walking
Posted: 19 Jul 2010 3:50 pm
I have been starting to prepare myself for a LEJOG walk, even though i dont know when im going to do it(wont be for atleast 1 year), LOL .
Ive been walking the dogs in the morning 2miles then walking at lunch 4miles and then another 2 miles in the evening with the dogs - so approx 8 miles a day for last two weeks. Would you reccomend that i do some warm up stretches before going for these walks? My calfs didnt half feel tight at first but dont appear to be a problem now.

Hi Hannah.
Well, warm-ups are never going to hurt and could help you avoid injury, but personally I never bothered with them; I just started off by walking slowly and sped up as my body warmed up. Then again, when I did my LEJOG, I injured my foot after a couple of weeks and it nearly sent me home, so I'm not sure you should be paying much attention to my fitness tips!
I'd probably do a couple of minutes' stretching before heading out, just so you can get in the habit, because it's a good habit to get into. After a while, you won't even think about it, which can only be a good thing...
Sounds like a great training schedule, by the way. Hope you're enjoying it!
All the best,
Mark
