Thanks J.P. ... I'm in Penzance now. It rained most of the way down but the sun came out when I arrived mid-afternoon. There's still lots of cloud around but the forecast is promising for Easter Sunday.
Good luck to everyone who is in their final stages of getting ready.
Cheers,
Steve

A sunny start for Steve - great! Though I get the feeling that day two's weather (wind, rain, sun) will be the norm for a little while longer...
Still, it'll give us all something to natter about. It's no fun talking about the weather if it's just sun, sun and more sun!

I'm really liking the ratio of wet to dry days that steve has achieved, hopefully this is a long term trend as it will make wild camping a pleasure.
Spring is really moving at a pace now trying to catch up so i'm looking forward to plenty of wildlife en route.
Cheers J.P.

I just spent the last hour updating myself on the happenings on your guest book and, as you have said, good luck to all the walkers this spring/summer. Some have already started, many more are yet to go, it means we will have a good summer of reading all the blogs. I feel envious of them all but my time will come once I have persuaded my wife a summer without me would probably be good for her sanity. I feel excited waiting to read all the forth-coming adventures, thank good for technology and the efforts of the bloggers.

I also am looking forward to wildlife spotting and especially noting how the beginning of Spring will hopefully follow me up the country.
One of my very few luxuries (this is coming from a man that takes no stove, pots etc and the minimum of clothing) is a pair of compact binoculars. Though by no means an expert, I am looking forward to spotting how many birds, animals and flowers I can see en route. I find that having an interest in nature means that I never get bored when walking alone.

This is the one part of the SW I'm yet to resolve. Has anybody got a suggestion for a walking route going West from Plynmouth aiming for the A30?
The coastal path will take too long, I would love to go that way but I just won't have enough time, also I want to avoid the A38 if possible, the first few miles are OK but it then becomes very dangerous for pedestrians. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Gary,
There's quite a criss-cross of minor roads that might be suitable for walking along, though there don't appear to be many off-road rights of way.
I've only had a quick scan of the map, but how about something like:
Plymouth - Saltash - Notter - Landrake - Tideford Crodd - Tilland - Menheniot - Liskeard - St Neot - Pantersbridge - Milltown - Bodmin
It might mainly be road walking, but those minor back roads are rather pleasant, I always think.
Food for thought, anyway!

Thanks Mark. After posting my question and looking at the online maps agin I had pretty much came to the same conclusion. I've been doing the Google streetview tour of those lanes and they look fairly pleasant for stroll, certainly a much more attractive proposition than the narrow winding A38 with it's heavy traffic.

Streetview - what a great tool for planning road walks! It never occurred to me before...
You could even check out the pubs in advance to see if they look cosy. Genius.

Yep, Streetview is a planning great tool, I'm spending ages on it doing virtual tours of the roads I'm thinking of walking along. Most of the UK seems to be covered now, including JOG and LE!
Also I'm taking screenshots of various maps, using paint to spray a highlight over my intended route, then saving them in a folder on my iPhone. Once they're on there you can pinch as usual to zoom in. I'm at the point now where I'm strongly considering walking without any paper maps at all.
