Subject: Getting from Hat Yai to Phuket

I am headed to South East Thailand with my girlfriend for the Chinese New Year during the middle of February and was wondering how I can book (or if I even need to book) bus tickets.
I will be flying from Beijing to Kuala Lampur, then taking a train to Hat Yai. From Hat Yai I will need to take a bus to Phuket.
I read over your blog and was wondering if you can provide some insite that would help me on my journey including bus booking in Hat Yai and Phuket, where the Hat Yai bus terminal is in relation to the train station and the best way to go about completing my journey.
I want to thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing back from you very soon.

I'm not sure I'll be much help, to be honest, as I was last in Hat Yai 13 years ago, I was only there for one night (which I think we spent out of town anyway), and when I tried to get the bus from Hat Yai to Ko Samui, I ended up in Phuket, on the opposite side of the country. As they say on the internet these days... FAIL!
So, should you book a bus? Well, you can, and if you're on a tight schedule it might be sensible, though if you just turn up, you shouldn't have any problem getting a seat (though make sure you know where it's going first!). If you do want to book, then the best thing to do would be to get in touch with a travel agent in Thailand. Google is your friend; a search for 'Hat Yai bus company' came up with this:
which at least indicates that there are travel agents out there who sell bus tickets from Hat Yai to Phuket, and that there are loads of buses every day.
As for getting from the train station to the bus terminal, you'll be able to catch a tuk-tuk without any problem; indeed, I suspect the challenge will be fighting them off once you arrive!
Basically, getting round Thailand is easy and tourist-friendly. In other words, I wouldn't worry about it; you'll get there, whether you or not you book, and if you're lucky the journey will be as intereating as the destination.
Hope this helps!
