Subject: Lands End John o'Groates Walk

Just finished reading your account of the LEJoG Walk. I found the book "unputdownable" and it made me realise what a tough challenge it is.
Two things surprised me, one that you didn't carry a pocket GPS which would have given you a check on exactly where you were at any one time, and also given you all the maps on-screen. Perhaps these things (Satmap etc) were not available then.
Also that you suffered almost continual health problems of one sort or another and to your great credit battled on to complete the walk.
Well done.
I was particularly interested to follow thw route on a map since I have been to many of the places in a lifetime of travelling around the UK, but not on foot.

Glad you liked the book - thanks for the kind words. 
You're right about why I didn't carry a GPS - they simply weren't up to the job back in 2003, unlike modern system. They were getting there, though, as 2003 was the year that Garmin released the iQue3600 PDA, which could show proper maps on a colour screen:

but even the most optimistic technophile walker wouldn't have relied on it as the only navigation aid on a long walk. After all, I walked the walk nearly a decade ago, when most GPSs looked like this:

So I stuck to OS maps and a compass, and I have to say, I loved my OS maps. Except in a howling gale, of course, but you can't win everything!
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to post - I really appreciate it. Makes all the effort worthwhile to know people are enjoying the results.
